Hi Tracy,

We've tried to create a widget to do this but due to ever-changing long-running cross-browser issues, what works for one browser doesn't necessarily work for another. So what works in IE7 may not work in Firefox 3, or Safari 3. So we parked this idea and haven't revisited. In most cases telling your customers to use Cntl-D (Control + D on PCs and Cmd + D on a Mac) should bring up the Bookmarks/Favorites options for each of the browsers.

As for adding HTML, at present you cannot integrate HTML/JavaScript into the site. If you have dropped code into your site then it will act purely as text with angle brackets and all. You could try the Forum, ask the question and see if any of our talented customers have created something that might suit you.

Regards - Walt

Hi Walt

Thanks for the reply in May. I am trying to get to the bottom of some unexplained negative SERP results and changes in PageRank for some of my sites and pages. I have had time to consider your advice and have some questions that I would appreciate some further input from yourself or Joe.

I now include the whole URL/URI in any linking that I do for pages that are not the home page IE. I include the Page ID Number. My reckoning is that all Moonfruit URLs are now indexed by Google (and the other SEs) with this so any previous links without the Page ID Number are now worthless for SEO purposes. This is an unfortunate effect of the change that was made to the URLs in Moonfruit.

The question I have is about home pages in Moonfruit. I have some home pages on sites that are indexed by Google twice for the same page. EG. If you query Google with site:www.just-fit.co.uk it returns:
www.just-fit.co.uk/ (the URL)
as well as
www.just-fit.co.uk/home/4525994995 (the URL and the Page ID Number)

In addition to this some other sites that I manage have the homepage indexed with just the URL and other homepages are indexed only once with DOMAIN/HOME/PAGE NUMBER. I understand this topic comes under the heading “ canonicalization ” in SEO terms.

I am concerned that the some of the SEO efforts I make are being wasted as the majority of the linking I do is with the home page addresses and I have always make these links just with the URL. I am sure you will agree that it is a lot neater to display a home page link with just the DOMAIN part of the URL rather than DOMAIN/HOME/PAGE NUMBER.

As far as I am aware there are no 301 Redirects with Moonfruit that would preserve search engine rankings so my questions on this are (sorry it has taken a while)... What is your advice for Home Page Linking? IE. Should one always link with the DOMAIN/HOME/PAGE NUMBER ? If I link with just the www.DOMAIN.com/ will this do me harm with the search engines? Does Moonfruit have any plans to tackle this if indeed there are issues (EG. Put a 301 redirect onto all versions of a home page to go to www.DOMAIN.com/)?

I look forward to your response.

thanks

Hi Justin,

The office has been rather hectic of late and Joe has been busy with meetings. So apologies for the lack of response.

You may have already checked your indexed pages using the 'site:' method in Google i.e. typing into the search box: "site:www.qimarketing.com".

You can simply just use the short format e.g. www.yoursite.com/pagename as it will automatically redirect to the fuller version with page ID. However, to ensure consistency you should use the full page URL e.g. www.yoursite.com/pagename/pageID which Google will use as the definitive URL.

So, in a nutshell use the full page URL (or URI) including the page ID in all links pointing at your site. This will mean that the links are consistent with what is currently indexed on Google.

Hope that helps.

Hi Alex,

No this is still fully operational. What is most likely to be causing the page IDs to be missing is that you are forwarding your domain name. Forwarding or masked forwarding positions your site within a frame which has implications for SEO and PayPal should you consider using e-commerce tools. It will also negate the Page IDs we supply.

The solution to this is to contact your domain name provider and set your DNS A-record to 'point' your domain name to our web servers. You've already added your domain names to your account you now need to have them pointed to get the full benefit of using your own domain. Please note this does not involve changing name servers and we do provide instructions in our FAQ. If you need further details on how to do this please contact support by submitting a query and indicate what domain name provider you use and we will see if we can assist further.

Hi Joe. Hope you are out there and can pick up on something we have touched on before – but I am now confused about.

I am having some issues with some of my sites Google SERPS and Goolge PageRanks and any comments from you here would help with some of my suspicions. My question relates back to the changes made the Sitemaker URLs (touched on in your comment here – no.13).

Essentially I am confused as to what URLs the search engines index and so what URLs we should use for linking purposes. When doing any deep linking I have always in past linked the page name only EG: www.qimarketing.com/advertising

The search engines index the URL with the 'new' number now, apart from the home page which is numberless. EG: www.qimarketing.com/advertising/4523168691

When linking to my site from another site should I be linking with the number or not? I know both methods will actually find the page but I am talking about the effects here on link building. Will this make any difference in your view?

many thanks

Hi

Will this URL mod affect my Google listings status? Over the last couple of days, my site has dropped considerably and my sitemap is showing 4 url's restricted by robot.txt and 1 http 403. Seems very strange that my site has almost disappeared from Google?

Hi Justin,

I've got the answers for you, the 30 character menu name field is actually a database constraint, which means it's much more difficult for us to change. Which is not to say we won't do it, but we can't do it quickly. The page title meta tag is a quick change, so we'll increase that to 120 characters on the next release. Thanks,

Hey guys,

This is great news! I won't say any more as it's all been said already - good on ya.

Just wanted to say that we got around this problem of visitors wanting to save the full URL or send it to someone else, by inserting the 'forward to a friend' feature on the most topical pages of our sites. Following another upgrade by MF last year, this meant that the full URL (including our own domain name) could be easily sent on to others.

What some of our regular visitors would do also, is email a page to themselves then cut and past the full URL that showed up in their mail - it is a fairly quick and efficient way for most people; however your upgrade will help visitors who are not particularly PC savvy, and who think that a cut&paste is something to do with hanging wallpaper........!! They will be happy! :-)

Lookin forward to Feb,
