New Release - 20th Dec 2007
By Joe on Thursday, December 20 2007, 11:53 - Release notes - Permalink
Ho ho ho. T'was the week before Christmas and all through the office not a developer was moving, not even those usually most active. Probably tired, but that's another story.
Anyway, it's Christmas present time! That's right, SiteMaker Claus has his goody bag stuffed full of little software updates for all the good boys and girls (and even those who haven't been so good). So here's the list in full...
New features
- Form 2 - the form strikes back
- Support for Google Webmaster tools
- Automatic generation of Sitemaps
- Text formatting - justified text supported in standard fonts
- Updates to moonfruit.com including new design templates
Bug fixes
- File downloads in IE7 no longer show an error message
That's the summary, but here's the detail for each of the new features including some guidance on how to use them.
Form 2
The new form widget can be found in the 'Forms' folder in the File Manager (Advanced Form). There's just one for now, but we'll add some new pre-configured versions in the New Year. The new form has a lot of new features which include:
- Support for drop down boxes, list boxes, radio buttons, check boxes
- Required fields - set fields to be compulsory and validate for 'email', 'numbers', or 'text only'
- Emails now come from the person filling in the form - not Sitemaker - we thought you'd like that one ;-)
- Forms are themeable and scalable just like the other new widgets
- Data submitted via the form is not only emailed, but also saved in a data store (CSV file) which you can download from your site (in the Edit panel), so you'll never lose data to junk filters again!
- All text on the form is now customisable, including buttons, titles, success and error messages
NB. We haven't added file attachments in this release, but hope to do it in the future.
Support for Google Webmaster tools
We heard many requests from our customers to support site validation for Google Webmaster Tools. If you sign up for Google Webmaster Tools, you can now paste the validation tag they give you into the 'Site Information' panel which will add it to your site HTML and allow you to be validated. For more information on Google Webmaster Tools see their pages on it.
Sitemaps
Slightly related to Webmaster tools, sitemaps are a list of all visible pages in your website. They are a tool to help search engines correctly index your site. We now generate one automatically for your site. Any page that is in your menu is automatically included in the sitemap and for pages that are not, you can add them in manually using a check box on the 'Page Settings' panel. You don't need to do anything to get the benefit of a sitemap, as search engines look for them anyway, but you can download it if you like at: yoursite.moonfruit.com/sitemap.xml.
Justified text
Not a biggy but still important, we've added justified text formatting to standard text boxes. This means you can now left align, right align, centre or justify your text boxes as you like. We hope to add this to the graphic fonts in the New Year.
Updates to moonfruit.com
We thought moonfruit.com could do with a tidy and reorganisation for 2008, so here it is. We've added a new community section to draw more attention to the great sites and users that we have on moonfruit. Content from the forum and blog are also displayed directly on the moonfruit homepage along with a feed displaying some of your finest sites. And finally, we've added some new design templates and created some new categories including one for those templates made and submitted by our customers.
And that's your lot. Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we'll be back with some more changes in 2008. Ho ho ho.

Google Webmaster Tools + Sitemaps! Thank you Santa! Have a cracking Christmas guys!
Wow!
This is everything I have been asking for now for the last 6 months. As I produce only business websites these features & additions will make a HUGE difference. Really glad to see that the developers do listen to the customers.
Thanks guys, have a great Christmas.
Fantastic work - you really were listening. Thankyou so much!
Just a thought, any chance that you might consider creating multiple versions of our sitemaps...
#1: Sitemap urls use: http://sitename.moonfruit.com/...
#2: Sitemap urls use: http://www.ourowndomain1.co.uk/...
#3: Sitemap urls use: http://www.ourowndomain2.co.uk/...
#4: Sitemap urls use: http://www.ourowndomain3.co.uk/...
In the meantime I will attempt to get round the problem by using Google Webmaster Cross Domain feature... I'll keep the lounge posted on my success
once again, thanks for listening moonfruit!
great job! Thank you!
Have a great 2008
Tom
This is a very cool release- good job guys. The updated form is VERY impressive, some very useful features in there. If only you had the time to bring all your widgets up to this very high standard. Please please please can you sort out the news widget next.....it desperately needs an update.
One question regarding the new form - how do I change the title of the email that gets sent to me?
cheers,
John
Dale: The sitemap is generated with the URL used to access it. So if you access it with yoursite.moonfruit.com, all the urls will have the yoursite.moonfruit.com domain; if you access it with yourdomain.co.uk then they'll have yourdomain.co.uk. Hope that helps!
John: The title of the email is hardcoded at the moment, so you can't change it.
HTH, Adam
If I wasnt so drunk after my works night out I would check out all the new features. As I am very drunk, ill do it at some point tomoz. Sounds interesting though. Have a good Xmas all at the Moonfruit office.
Mark
Hi Guys,
Just want to say congratulations on the latest release, been with Sitmaker for quite some years now and this has definately got to be my favourite.
Only thing that might need changed would be the Subject Header in the Form widget, when I sent a test message out it shows in the email as follows: 'Form submission from ['My Website Title'] - [contact] - [Advanced Form (NEW!) 1]'
Even if you could remove the Advanced Form (NEW!) 1 or change it to something like Contact Form etc.
Only a slight issue but as I said well done guys.
Merry Christmas to you all and Happy New Year.
Neil
Well isn't that a nice christmas prezzie from ya.. I have been waiting for Drop-Down options in the Forms for ages now, but what the hek, they're finally here! Well done Moonfruit... think this has to be one of your best releases! What ya working on next, ability to add HTML to our sites? =)
Cheers again n have a wicked xmas n 2008
Dave
Neil:
The email subject is generated as follows:
Form submission from [Your_Website_Title] - [Your_Page_Name] - [Your_Widget_Name]
To change the Your_Widget_Name bit, select the widget for editing then double click on it's name (the title at the top left of the widget).
Thanks,
Ian
Ian,
I have tried changing the name of my widget (i think) and it doesn't affect the email title
John
Hi John,
Good point. It looks like we have some tweaking to do. In the meantime, if you go to the 'Set Up' tab when editing the form, change the 'Form Title' and save. This will now provide your emails with a distinctive form name plus your website address.
So, if you change the Form Title, your emails will arrive with [Your_Form_Title] submission from [Your_Website_Title].
Hope that helps.
Walt
hey Walt,
when i go to the setup tab the only options i have is "Email Setup" which enables me to change the email address. There's also options to "Reset data" and "Download data". There's no option to change the form title.
John
Yay you got more updates though i would prefer sometime if you had a widget that allowed users to use their own html without having to wait for a specific widget to be made.
Hi phoenixwolf,
This is a much discussed topic. SiteMaker is made in Flash, which is what allows it to be so easy to use, with true drag and drop and point and click editing. Because Flash cannot include HTML inside it, we cannot allow you to add HTML directly into your site, though we can sometimes build specific widgets that do certain functions that mimic the behaviour you would like. I hope that makes sense,
Joe
Hi John,
Ignore the tabs with regards to the Form name. Double click the widget and you will get a small 'title' box appear at the top of the widget i.e. Advanced Form. If you double click in this box, you can then edit the name of the form. Once you click away, the name will be saved to the Editor and you will see the new name in the 'Object name' drop down on the 'Info' tab.
This will then be published in your emails.
Walt
with new releases comes the new problems.....
why is my website now automatically changing blocks that i had at 6x6 (as a colour only) to 6x20. It now makes my site look absolutely crap & novice like.
this should not happen please explain why & how i can get this sorted.
Hi John,
We're not sure what you mean by 'blocks'. Can you please submit a query, if you haven't already done so, and detail specifically what you mean, on what page or pages this occurs and any other relevant information. We will then try to respond as quickly as we can.
Thanks
Is Webeden the same company as Moonfruit, if so will the verify & sitemap tools be available to webeden also. Lastly can i use the MF forum.
Thanks Alan
Hi Alan,
SiteMaker Software is distributed through our own website, Moonfruit as well as numerous 'reseller' websites like Webeden.
Google Verify is enabled through the SiteMaker software and is independent of the websites they are distributed through. So, you can set up Verify on Moonfruit, Webeden or any other reseller) and Sitemap is automatically generated for all sites.
As for the forum, you are more than welcome to visit and comment.

Have found these release notes only today!, though found the great new form a couple of weeks ago. How do I make sure i am notified of new releases? Also, I have one query about forms, databases, etc. - why no £ sign? Any chance this could be resolved?
Hi ya guys, I’m new to moonfruit, I have designed my own website www.mytiarashop.co.uk within a couple of month and I am loving it, can anyone tell me how I can verify my site on yahoo, Google I have managed to verify, but no such look with yahoo, :0) x
Hi Erica,
We don't provide a 'Verify' for Yahoo. The majority of our customers only ever ask for Google tools.
We've had so few requests for Yahoo tools that it is not economical, time wise, to enable this feature. So, at present it won't be something that we will be able to provide.
Thanks
Hiya, No Probs!, also my site (mytiarashop.co.uk.co.uk) is listed on one of my friends 10 domains she has with her moonfruit account, I am wanting to open my own moonfruit account myself (because I love it so much), I have spent a lot of time building this site, is there anyway I can transfer the site to another moonfruit account.
Thanks Erica
Based on a recent article from SEOMOZ
#4 - Bing's Webmaster Tools Are Important
If you don't have an account with Bing Webmaster Tools, now is the time. Although not yet as robust as Google's, Bing WMT is working hard to catch up and even surpass their rivals with features that will prove valuable for webmasters on all platforms. The data you get from Bing WMT will also be important for conducting better organic SEO campaigns on that engine and seeing how Google & Bing may view your site differently.
will moonfruit be making it possible to add a meta file so Bings webmaster tools can be confirmed?
Is there any way of adding extra meta tags to sitemaker sites?
Hi,
While Bing might be a Microsoft product and a replacement for Live Search, it has only recently been unveiled. We will monitor its popularity and look at support for the webmaster tools if it the market penetration reaches a suitable adoption level. We apply this policy to many things including browser and Flash Player versions.
As for extra meta tags, can you be more specific with what tags and your reasons? We are always willing to look at improving the SEO features if relevant.
Thanks - Walt
