RESOLVED: Service Outage: 23rd October 19:10 - 21:30 BST (GMT +1)
By Joe on Thursday, October 23 2008, 21:43 - Service status - Permalink
Service Outage: 19:10 - 21:30 BST
A power failure at our data centre resulted in a complete loss of service at 19.10. This caused all of our servers to shut down unexpectedly and then restart. We then had to run full diagnostic checks to make sure they were running correctly before bringing the service back online at 21.30 BST.
The service has now been fully restored, with no loss of data or other negative side effects. Latency may be a little bit higher than normal over the next few hours while caching is restored on the live system.
We apologies for this unexpected outage, and will be following up with our network provider to discover the cause, and why secondly power supplies were not called into use.
Thank you for your patience during this outage.
==============
UDPATE: 10:12 BST (GMT +1)
Because the power failure caused our machines to shut down unexpectedly, our disk array which contains uploaded files restarted in 'read only' mode as a precaution. This means we have to run full disk integrity checks before we can go back to 'write' mode. Only 50% of sites have been affected by this, and we will repair them 10% at a time.
In any event, all content on these disks is backed up both on and off site, so in event of any errors in the disk, we can fully restore the files.
We will let you know when this is complete.
==============
UDPATE: 14:00 BST (GMT +1)
The service is now fully restored.
This means that all websites should now:
- Be fully accessible
- No longer display a "500 Internal Server Error" message
- Permit files to be uploaded normally
- Enable forms to be submitted without error
- Allow pages to be saved correctly
Now that the service has been fully restored we will begin our investigation into the causes of the outage and how we can ensure that this is not repeated. We will ensure that you are kept informed of our findings as well as the solutions.
If you are still encountering problems related to this outage (see above) you may wish to:
- Flush or clear your cache/temporary Internet files within your web browser. This will ensure any error pages saved in your browser will be cleared and your website reloaded from fresh.
- Contact support using the query form and give us as much detail as possible about the error e.g. any error messages, when it occurs, what pages it occurs on etc.
Thanks again for your patience, understanding and support with this issue. It is very much appreciated.

Although disconcerted by the outage, & as you say by the fact that secondary power supply did not kick in such as to make this a non-event - I am as ever very impressed by your real-time information on the problem. There's nothing like timely information when dealing with issues like this.
Good show.
i was also amazed at how quickly moonfruit dealt with this unexpected outage as at first i couldn't understand why after my browser ( firefox) decided to crash on me i could access sites like web mail, msn etc but not moonfruit or my website
then i thought i try the moonfruit lounge to see if there was a posting to inform us site leaders about a so called outage but couldn't see any notification but it was after i googled moonfruit that this site came up http://status.sitemakerlive.com/
from there i could see info on the power cut
as with the the secondary power supply not kicking in could this have been back up generators
You only know the true measure of a service when things go wrong and once again my decision to use Moonfruit has been totally validated.
Well done - great product, great service.
Tim
as this latest outage came with out warning
moonfruit are still investigating
even though all systems are back up and running some site leaders are still experiencing problems like not being able to upload files on to their websites
still can't upload - any idea of ETA on a fix?
I too cannot upload to some sites.
Morning all, we'll get onto the file upload issue ASAP and give you an update as soon as we have one. Thanks, Joe
Forms at my site are not working. When trying to submit customers are only getting ERROR message
Hi even, this sounds like a separate problem. Can you submit a support query and the customer service team will follow it up. Thanks,
Joe
Why doesn't moonfruit consider a new service provider ... look how much problem your having moonfruit. So much downtime. Surely there is someone out their better than your current provider.
2 out of my 5 sites are down? The only two that I have domain names registered with MF for. One returns page not found, and the other returns a internal error 500. Anyone else experiencing this??
It's all been said above but just wanted to add that the response and communication during last nights outage was quick and efficient. Great work guys... had me worried for an hour or so...
Hi, I've had no communication from Siteleader or Moonfruit describing anything remotely about the outage and in fact my site is still showing as Internal Error 500!
Any answers guys and Girls? would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Hi John, an understandable question. For many years we had little to no down time to speak of with our service provider. In fact it rated better than most, hence our sticking with them. The last time we had unscheduled downtime was an outage in Jan for 2 hours which in our books was too long and too recent. Moving provider may sound like a good idea but it has inherent risks and costs although it is one we have considered. However, at present, our main consideration is to restore all sites and services to full operational capacity. We will then be investigating what happened, why, and what needs to be done. Lastly, we will then provide a full report on the Lounge of our findings.
Keller, Ghosthunter, there are a number of issues still being dealt with and a 500 internal server error is a symptom of these. We hope to have full service back in a few hours if not sooner. We are working through system bit by bit checking and restoring where necessary and with the number of sites we have it is taking us some time. So please bear with us.
Balla-Art, thanks for the feedback.
Walt
Forms at my site are not working - An error message is displayed.
We have now finished the disk integrity checks so you should no longer see the "500 server error". We are yet to switch back to 'write' mode so some of you (not all users are affected) may still experience issues with uploading files, saving, or form submission. We are working as quickly as we can to restore this service.
Thanks Walt
Thanks to everyone at MF for your super-quick customer service replies. You must've been overwhelmed with emails from people with problems, so well done MF, these things happen and it's the way you guys recover that show what kind of Co you are. Thank you
Thanks Keller,
We are trying our best to improve communications and ensure all customers are kept informed of updates, problems, releases and maintenance.
We are keen to maintain three things...keeping the software simple to use, ensuring we continue to take the software (and the business) forward and ensuring we keep improving our lines of communication.
Thanks again.
service has gone again any ideas why?
October 29 Is moonfruit is down again?
I can access the lounge but not the main site..
it appears it is waiting for any news from moonfruit to tell us what is going on
Yes, site seems to be down. If it's the same reason, then that's certainly not acceptable service from MF's providers.
moonfruit is it possible to tell us what is going on and an eta on when it will be fixed please
Moonfruit Site now reporting technical difficulties
We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties and are working hard to resolve them.
Please come back in a few minutes' time.
this has now showing on the main page and also on site front pages

Well, I'm afraid my visitors are not even getting any message that useful! The site seems to be displaying in HTML, with a list of links, none of which work! Not very helpful, I fear!
yeah that message has now gone and it is now just showing nothing there is now an update on the front page of moofruit lounge with details of what is going on
Customers are now emailing with these issues!! they won't see Walts message about the timing of this issue all they will state is that the sites are down again!
Hope this is resolved soon
Apologies for this. Fortunately we managed to boot the standby system up and get it fully functioning within the hour. We created another notification on the Lounge to keep these two issue apart as they both require their own investigation, reports and solutions.
We will of course report back to you on our findings for both the outage of 23 Oct and this one. Thanks for your patience.
