New release - 18th Dec 2008
By Joe on Tuesday, December 16 2008, 15:40 - Release notes - Permalink
So this is Christmas (laaa, laaa, laaa, laaa), and what have we learned (laaa, laaa, laaa, laaa), another year older (laaa, laaa, laaa, laaa), etc. In fact speaking of another year older, as 2009 approaches we'll be entering our 10th year of moonfruiting, so not bad going for the old website builder.
Anyway, you don't want to hear about that, you're interested in Santa's Goodie bag, or should I say Google bag...
Keeping up the theme of releasing Google based widgets at Xmas (see last year) we thought we'd add the much requested Google maps feature to SiteMaker so that you can help your customers find you - if you want them to find you ;-)
Google Maps Integration
- Add a Google maps interface directly into your site
- Set a location beacon to show your exact location on the map
- Allow your customers to manipulate the map (zoom/drag) to help them get their bearings
- It's in the 'functional' folder called 'google map'
Improved YouTube Video Feed
We have also updated our video player to use YouTube’s very own video API to ensure reliability. This will mean that if YouTube change how they serve videos, you don’t have to worry about your video failing, we will pick up any changes and ensure the video feed is maintained.
However, please be aware that if the video owner has set or marked the video as "private" or "embed only", the video will not be available via our player.
Some other stuff
- 4 new templates to choose from
- File manager reorganisation, including up to date 'all' folders to help you find things more easily
And...that's it. Not quite the usual Xmas bonanza granted, but we've been working on several big pieces of new functionality and haven't been able to complete them in time to get them to Santa.
We tried outsourcing some of our development to Santa's Elves to speed things up, but the economy at the North Pole is still largely based on traditional manufacturing and hasn't yet made the transition to a service sector based economy with strong conceptual software skills, so that didn't work out so well. On the plus side they did make us a nice set of toy soldiers.
So you'll have to accept an IOU from us, for early next year, for the membership and e-Commerce features. But to give you a little sneak preview, I've got a couple of screenshots of the work in progress.
The enhanced membership features will arrive first. We're building them first as a platform the the e-Commerce improvements, e.g. to run a good shop, you want your customers to be able to create user accounts and we found our current membership tools a bit lacking. So the new ones will make it easier to create and manage members, set permissions for pages (e.g. members only), and communicate with those members via mailing lists. The above screenshot shows the 'permissions' section where you can select multiple pages and apply view/edit rights in one go.
One of the big limitations with the current PayPal tools is that you have to set up each product separately. Well no more. With the new system you will be able to use the product manager interface and manage the attributes of your products in one place, e.g. price, sizes, colour. Once your products are set up you can display them in your site using 'product display widgets' which make it quick to add and organise many different products on a page, e.g. you can add them just like adding images to a gallery which will automatically set-up the price display and the 'buy'/'add to cart' buttons for you. The above screenshot shows the product manager in 'product list' mode.
So there you go, we are working on them, honest! These are screenshots from the working prototypes, so not just pretty pictures, though the final designs may change a bit as we do usability testing.
Have a wonderful Xmas (or holiday season) and we'll see you all in the New Year. Ho ho ho.

Comments
Google Maps is a great Xmas present – thanks guys.
The e-commerce stuff looks like it will be a much improved addition to MF. To go with this are there any plans to increase the maximum page lengths to accommodate pages with long product lists?
Thanks and have a great Crimble
Justin
Hi Justin,
I believe the maximum page length (2200) is a limit in Flash. The product display widgets will allow you to use up to all of this space, but they will also be 'pageable' so you can go through pages of products just like posts in the forum. I hope that helps,
Joe
Guys,
My version 3 site http://www.ukgospel.moonfruit.com suddenly went mad earlier today!!
Help!! I think you might be doing something that has affected version 3 sites!!
EVERYTHING is messed up on my site: page length (not long enough in MANY cases), menu showing where I didn't want them to, invisible links now visible and many more horrors!!
VISITORS EVEN SEE THE EDIT MODE!!!!!
It looks HORRIBLE!!!!!
I have *well over a thousand pages* and was preparing for the upgrade you promised would happen *later this month*, not now!!
Help, please. EXTREMELY urgent!!
Same here....not impressed!
Will this store also allow us to sell digital downloads...?
UKGospel and Ian, we were doing some tidy up on some code around version numbers this appears to have caused the problem. We've discovered the cause and expect to have it reversed out ASAP. Sorry for the pre-holiday heart attack!
Walt,
A pre-Christmas attack is just what was needed. Nothing like a major panic to make you feel alive... (",)
Still not fixed yet (16:29), but we live in hope...
Any idea on timescale?
...and that's why I put off upgrading for so long...
With the number of pages I have on this site the upgrade is just going to be a *nightmare*.
You've already ruined my Christmas as I'm going to have to work through most of it to sort what I'm going to do....
Bah, humbug, Sitemaker! Grr!
Hi UKGospel,
Sorry about that, it will be fixed in the next few minutes. And sorry it will take you some time to upgrade the site. We have been running the two versions in parallel for as long as we could (4 years now), but finally the sitemaker 3 legacy code is affecting how we can improve the sitemaker 4 product, as they still share the same data structure. 95% of all SM3 users have now upgarded, and there is a small fraction that still have not. We had hoped 4 years would be enough time, and the benefits of using SM4 are now significant because of the expanded feature set.
Apologies this will cause you some Xmas bother, but I hope you enjoy the benefits of SM4 once it is done. Take care and good luck!
Joe
UKGospel, yeah sorry about that we are working on getting that out this afternoon. Will update you as soon as it's out.
Ian, your site problem is not related to UKGospel's. You don't have a SM3 site so it's been affected by something else. The changes to your site look completely unrelated to anything we've done with our release. However we can see you have been quite busy making changes to your container - the area your site sits in. What we have done to restore the site to it's original width by reverting to a restore point or saved copy. So if you check your site now it's back to what looks like the original width.
-Walt
I love the very polite way you guys dish out your nasty smackdowns!!
...yes, I know we've had v3 and v4 running in parallel for 4 years (poke in the eye right back atcha, Joe!!!) (",)
All my other sites are on Version 4 and I LOVE it.
I've had so many designs on UKGospel.com over the years (since 2000, I think) that a V4 upgrade and subsequent page tweaks was just going to be sooooo much work....
In the end I decided that a transfer of content seemed like less hassle - but was always scared of doing it in view of the number of pages involved...
Oh well, time to dive in and start copy/pasting/downloading pictures en masse - no mince pies for me...
While we’re talking: couple more questions
- will Moonfruit Sitemaker ever become (or offer) a CMS...? It's up against Joomla in terms of which one I decide to go for at the moment...
- ‘Query’ also asked about digital downloads. Any news on that?
Cheers (I think…)
Oh yeah:
Keep up the good work, guys...
Sitemaker might not be to everyone's taste, and I wish we didn't have this Flash/SEO thing to deal with, plus it's a nightmare for browsing on mobile phones (at the moment), and yeah your customer response is sometimes slow...
But I still think you guys do a *superb* job!!
Well done and happy Christmas!
P.S. Having said all of that - my site still isn't working as at 17:22!!!
17:24: site back!!
Thanks, guys!
Answer to the Joomla, CMS and downloads questions...?
Hi UKGospel,
All fixed. At 17:25. ;-)
Thanks and Merry Christmas to you as well.
Walt
Oooops, forgot to tidy up the unanswered questions. Joomla and CMS? Perhaps.
We have to take each request and suggestion on its merits, its feasibility, and its impact on the customer base. Hence our working on membership first, then e-Commerce. If we see a growing need by a large number of our customers for something like this, then we will have to look at what is required to build it (with full functionality), the resources required and the time frame for development measured against other projects. So as I said, perhaps, but it certainly does look interesting.
As for downloads, it won't be part of our initial e-Commerce offering but probably something we'll look at further down the line. There are many things we could include in this new tool but that would take us till 2010 to deliver. So what we will do is deliver you an exceptionally good e-Commerce tool early 2009, and then add features to it as are needed. In the meantime we suggest trying payloadz.com as a nice alternative.
But thanks for keeping me honest with the questions ;-)
Walt
Thanks, Walt...
Like they say: honesty is the best policy (",)
I thought you'd say something like that...
It does stand to reason - you're always gonna need critical mass for a lot of your feature developments. Sadly - based on some of the comments I sometimes read here - some people don't appreciate that.
Besides I think the 'Jooma vs Sitemaker' question is fundamentally an apples vs oranges comparison anyway. I just wanted a feel for where you guys were going with it - thanks for the honest answer...
I already have a Sitemaker online store that I was looking to migrate to OSCommerce (or something like it), but that screenshot means I might hold on for a bit longer - I hope the front end will look just as good (subject to your user testing, etc...)
Can I slip in another quick question? (Sorry - it is on-topic, though): will the store be able to play music using the Sitemaker players (as I run a music store)?
At the moment I link to another site for music previews (a major hassle), and - still on a related point - what's the current limit to space I can buy (as I have *LOADS* of MP3 previews - *LOADS*)
I thought 2009 was the year I'd be migrating my sites to Open Source systems - but it looks like you might have me for a while yet...
Thanks for listening and responding - and sorry for going *so far* off topic!
Hi UKGospel,
The front-end of the store will fit into an existing SiteMaker site, and you'll be able to add any widgets to the store pages in addition to the product display widgets. So you will be able to have jukeboxes there too and play music if you want to. I hope that helps,
Joe
Cheers, Joe!!
I'll check me account re: my 'how much space can I buy' question - sure I've seen it there before...
Hi UKGospel,
We do have some 'secret' packs that have more diskspace than Max, so if you get stuck we can always give the instructions to be able to upgrade to those. Thanks,
Joe
Cheers...
In view of the amount of MP3s I have (and am likely to create more of), I might be taking you up on that offer...
I'm sure you can see my email address: pls email me details...
Thanks, again! Great service (as usual!)
Hi UKGospel,
Actually it doesn't have to be a secret! If you type 'supermax' into the promotions box on the upgrade panel, you will see the Supermax products. They allow 3, 5, 10 and 15 GB of disk respectively. I hope that helps,
Joe
Typed it in and...
Hell-oooooo: more options.....
Thanks, Joe!
Hi Joe,
Really looking forward to all the great new features, awesome work indeed, been.
Regarding Digital Downloads and selling MP3/Wav/Avi files, that would be great for bands, I really hope you guys make a great internal control system for this within our sites, to monitor and sell music/music videos directly from us artists/bands at SiteMaker.
Happy Christmas to all at SiteMaker.
Best wishes,
Darrel.
Hi Joe,
Does SuperMax Products only include disc storage and not also download bandwidth?
If not, you SiteMaker please also include extra Bandwidth options in the same manner.
Cheers,
Darrel.
Thanks Halo (Darrel),
Yes SuperMax products also include increased bandwidth, along side the increased disk quota. I'll list them below:
As for digital downloads, we are hoping to provide much greater flexibility and scope in our new SiteMakerShop so watch this space ;-)
And Merry Xmas to you too.
Walt
Hi Joe,
Until SiteMaker develop a Digital Downloads Store to sell music and music videos with Paypal, is there any hope of SiteMaker giving us a Downloads Monitoring Panel, as currently there's no way of knowing how many people download individual free promo MP3's, etc.
I'd like to see a downloads control centre that shows all the downloads, per day, week, month, and total amount since upload, etc.
Thanks,
Darrel.
Hi Joe,
Last but not least, would SiteMaker provide a Real Time Bandwidth Status Monitor, with details of daily/weeky usage, this was be a great stats insight I feel for those looking to monitor download traffic, and help later with the SiteMaker Digital Downloads Store overview of stats/usage.
Cheers,
Darrel.
Hi Walt,
Those SuperMax accounts look great, those with the Downloads Store look something I'm going to need to use.
May I ask, what's the 24hr bandwidth for the Standard, Plus, Max accounts currently?
Can't wait for the new SiteMakerStore, thats going to be liberating for us making music.
Thank you.
please guys do not ask for to much as I can not afford any price increase at the mo what with the credit crunch ! I am greatful for all new updates that are FREE
Merry Christmas Moonfruit
Drew
Great release!
The calendar and news/blog objects seem to have disapeared from the Library.
When you guys say early 2009 for the ecommerce tools could you be a ikkle bit more precise?? I have a basketball retailer wanting an ecommerce site, if I can give him an idea of when the new tools will be available he may wait for these instead of using what is currently there??
Merry Xmas One and All
Wow, you leave the Lounge alone for 5 minutes and everyone is posting ;-)
I'll try to answer, as best I can your queries.
Darrel, as far as Digital Downloads is concerned it's on our radar. We have to put the infrastructure in place first with membership and then the Shop. We'll get the shop out with a number of useful features and then see what can be added. So we'll take on board your request for a control centre, although no promises on that score. But digital downloads is something we do want to provide.
To figure out the daily bandwidth just take the current figure (monthly) and divide by 30 so Max which is 60GB/m would be 2GB per day (24 hours).
Hi Drew, well we aren't considering any price increases. All these release and future development is factored into current development life cycles. We are committed to keeping prices low, and yet still offering new features and tools on a regular basis.
Peter, the Calendar and News/Blog were never on offer in the Library as they were always offered as a page type. If you go to the pages menu, add a new page, you'll find Calendar and News/Blog pages in the choices.
Paul, it's hard to be specific, although we hope to have the shop out early Q2. We would love to give an exact date as in the scope of our development we may find more features we want to include for just a little more work. Or that one particular key feature takes a little longer than expected. We would rather not give a specific date and disappoint everyone. As we get closer to the time we will be able to give a more accurate estimate but at this stage it isn't feasible. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks
Walt
Hi,
From what I understand a "shopper" (using the new "MF Shop") will have to sign up to purchase a item through us . If most transactions go through PayPal, do all users have to have a MF account? I know for certain that some people don't like signing up to a account purchasing something, esp if its a small item. Can we have the option of just collecting their personal details instead of making them sign up?
Also will there be branding on the Shop or User Sign ups?
Thanks
John
Hi John,
The shop will work like most other stores, in that a customer can complete an order without signing up, or they can sign up if they want to have an account for future purchases.
The membership changes we are doing will allow 'site only' membership, which means users don't to have a 'sitemaker' user account. So in this sense, yes there will be non-branded sign-ups allowed.
I hope that helps,
Joe
Very useful - thanks!

Hi Walt,
Thank you for all the insight, look forward to seeing the new features roll out and the development progression.
Hi Joe,
Will the SiteMakerStore be Non-Branded, or at least the option of making it such, etc.
Thank you,
Darrel.
Wooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooo!!!!! Ohh i cant wait for this, its going to be amazing with the non branded membership! I already recommend moonfruit to everyone, and now i will have another reason to recommend it even more! awesome!!!!! :)
Hi Halo,
We don't have any intention to brand the shop. It will be like our other widgets in that they will simply do what they are intended to do without any branding.
Regards,
Walt
Ok... I've been out on a long lunch I guess... I have a bunch of sites and read about version 3 and 4 etc... upgrading and having to re-do everything ? Where do I read about this and find out what my position is?
thanks
Jeff
Hi Toronto Home Theatre,
All details are included in the email. In summary, we have been running version 3 and 4 concurrently for as long as we possibly could but now the very old SiteMaker 3 legacy code is affecting how we take SiteMaker forward.
Just follow the instructions in the email and take note of the dates. This still gives you time to play around with the look and feel of any upgraded sites before committing those changes. Once the cut off date is reached you won't have any choice but to use the Version 4 tools to edit your site. That said you will have infinitely more options available to you and plenty more features.
Regards - Walt
Hi Joe,
I Have a question.
Considering, site maker has a user from all around the world and people using it in different language.
Will be able to built mentioned widgets as customizable so people can customize headers according to their language. For exampele Can we able to customize "username" header in to our own language etc.
Hi Pijjama,
At present our software isn't customisable. As a Site Leader you can add text and title text boxes in a variety of languages, but the widgets them selves are only available in English from Moonfruit.com and French on Moonfruit.fr.
Changing the widget language would require translating the entire product and this is a mammoth undertaking even for one language, like French. It is unlikely, at present, that we would be able to offer anything as flexible as what you appear to need. But as the product develops, who knows. A few years ago we wouldn't have thought we'd be offering SiteMaker Software in French!
But thanks for your comments. It's food for thought.
You should consider the little elves here in Xi'an for your outsourcing antics. A fully booked up army of engineers just waiting to please. And the price is right too! Forget about software as a service (saas) and start thinking about Software in Xian (SIX)
Thanks for all your great efforts guys
Cheers

Hi Guys
2 questions:
1) Will it soon be possible to ask website users for an email address prior to allowing them to download say, a free report, from our site? To encourage data collection of prospects which can be usd for email marketing campaigns.... After entering the email adress (possibly using existing forms), we would need functionality to redirect them to a 'dowload' page from the form/request page, conditional upon their having entered the required data. But at the moment we cannot redirect from the existing forms....
Makes sense?
2) Re the flash page length limitation... we love moonfruit but have a pressing need to sell a digital download via a very long 'sales letter' page/site..you know, the ones with all different font sizes and colours, and a PS and a PPS.... e.g. http://www.guide2ebooks.com/ ....Who do you recommend for building the website?
(of course we wil continue using moonfruit for all other sites :)
Thanks for your time.
Q
Hi Walt,
How about a widget for that grants access to a (free promo) download but only via an email submission. Example - a view to using the emails for a follow up promo newsletter, etc.
This would be a great promo tool.
Best wishes.
Hi...I'm desparate for the new ecommerce release and have been stalling clients...what's the word...a week?....a month? 2months? third quarter??????
please advise
Hi,
We recently bought this package to build a webshop for ourselves, I saw this and thought I'd have to be a member to get into the ecommerce tools so paid for the Max package.
How do I view/get to the 'Sitemaker Shop Manager' part of my site?
Thanks
Craig
Hi,
Is there any news on when this will be released?
Thanks
Craig
Sounds like there's not a peep out of moonfruit on this release, I'm begining to wonder...
There has in fact been plenty of peeps out of us. But just not in this article. We certainly have been busy replying in later articles, as well as the forum over the last 12 months.
We are working on it, still. More on the delays can be read elsewhere.
If you want to integrate some eCommerce tools we suggest you try our HTML Snippet widget which came out early 2009 and saw an upgrade later last year.
This will allow use of a variety of HTML snippets which you can add to your site including Google Checkout, Paypal Buttons (HTML versions), and Amazon AStore.
We provided this widget to enable customers to get eCommerce in place while we were working on our own version.
Hope that helps.
Walt
I'm using a certain ecom package at the min elsewhere its very expensive and very difficult to customize layout etc... but they convieniently have a design team on stand by for the sum of £30 per hour!!! cant wait for this please hurry moonfruit!
