Want to know how to grow your website with more members and advocates? How to interact, manage and develop a better relationship with your visitors? Want to create members-only/client-only pages or sections? Want to post information or updates from your website to Facebook/Twitter? Build a collaborative website with edit rights for different people?
Well then, the membership release is what you've been waiting for! After many months of development it has finally arrived, jam packed with new features and a lot of improvement. Read on for more detail...
This release sees a whole new membership section with a number of improvements to make it easier for site owners to attract, manage and communicate with their members. In particular, the main areas of improvement are: a) to make it easier to invite members to join; b) to ensure members become members of the site only and no longer have to create a SiteMaker account; c) to replace 'SiteMaker' branding in the join process with the site owner's own look and feel; d) to allow site owners to create site administrators; e) to make managing page permissions easier; and finally, f) to enable integration with some Facebook and Twitter services.
More detail on these features is provided below. While there are over 100 new FAQs in the Help section covering the various new features, we will aslo be publishing some specific articles over the coming weeks. These will highlight more of what's new, what's improved and how you can make the most of it.
Getting new members
It's now possible to invite new members using your Windows Live or Gmail address books. Alternatively, you can also just copy and paste a list of emails addresses if you want to transfer them from an offline address book. The content of the invite email can also be customised by you. As a site owner, it is now possible to create a member yourself, while in edit mode. Previously, the site owner would have to ask the new member to come to his or her site and create an account before being able to assign any access/edit rights.
Site Level Membership
Previously visitors to a Moonfruit site who wanted to join as a member were required to complete a two-stage sign up process: firstly, they had to create a SiteMaker account; secondly, they then had to join the site. Now, all new sites will be built with Site Level Membership, which means that visitors join the site in a one step process. It also means that the members are free to choose a username that is unique to that site alone. Previously, usernames had to be unique across all usernames for all members of the sites built by the partner.
Sites built before the launch will be able to upgrade their site to site level membership, therefore getting access to all the new features provided under site level membership. However, this is not mandatory and in fact some sites use the Moonfruit wide membership so that they can run a number of sites with shared logins.
The join up process now involves setting up a join page which contains a new customisable login/join widget where the site owner can create a branded experience explaining the benefits of joining their site. Previously, the join process took place in a SiteMaker editor style popup window Emails from the site now refer to the site's name and come from the site email address. Previously, some account emails were from the SiteMaker Team and mentioned SiteMaker.
Site Admin
A new role of Site Administrator has been created. A site admin has access to all the toolbar functions, but any information regarding the site owner, such as billing details, are not accessible. This feature is particularly useful for website resellers.
Managing members and page permissions
It is now possible to set up permissions for multiple pages at once. The interface on the settings panel has been improved to make it much simpler to understand what permissions have been given to individual members as well as each group.
You can now create groups and drag and drop members into those groups from a single panel. Site owners can now view and update members’ email addresses and send them an email that allows the member to reset their password (as long as the site is using site level membership)
Integration with Facebook and Twitter
It is now possible to allow visitors to become a member of your site using their Facebook login credentials, therefore making it easier for users to register as they won't have to create another username and password.
You can also link your site with your Facebook account enabling you to post notes and updates on your wall about your website so that your friend network on Facebook can hear about your site or be updated with any changes.
It is also possible to send updates to an associated Twitter account to communicate with your twitter followers about your site.
NB. If you have your own domain name you'll have to get a Facebook Application key to use the Facebook features. You can do this in the new 'People' section on the 'Settings' tab and we'll talk you through the process. It's quite simple.
And that as they say is that. It's taken a while for us to get our heads around it all, but we're sure you'll get to grips with it much faster. Let us know what you think and we hope you enjoy the new tools!

I'm viewing the new features (great by the way!!) but there are no right scroll bars appearing on the PEOPLE > SETTING TAB...(I hope that makes sense?)
In other words I cannot see the whole of the settings screen? not sure if anyone else has the same issue.

Yes, I know what you mean. I get this on my mac. We're working on the fix. In the meantime while in the people section you can change the 'view' to 75% rather than 100% and it should work. You'll have to put it back when going back to your site. I hope that helps,

I noticed last night that all my Moonfruit sites were very slow to load, in fact I gave up in the end. I know there was a downtime this morning, but now they are really slow...Even the Moonfruit home page is very very slow? on all 4 of my computers! ???

One thing Joe, will there be a way of bulk uploading a CSV to the members area. I currently have a lot of clients using iContact and the like and would like an easy way to import.

I have utilised the new membership widget and the one problem I am having is that the the new account creation stucks at username. It keeps saying the username chosen is already taken regardless of what username you choose.
Perhaps you could point me to the right direction as to why this is happening?

yes this looks like a bug. We'll look into it. If you convert your site to 'private membership' then it will work. You can do this on the 'settings' tab. This error is happening while your members still become members of 'sitemaker' before joining your site. But we will fix this. Thanks for letting us know,

@ Halo - we will be adding new RSS tools in the future, but they are not yet finalised for which features.
@ Ian - members uploading profile pics has been discussed but not put into development. At the moment if members join via Facebook Connect it will use their FB image when they are logged in, but we're not currently adding that to posts on forums or anything.
@ Osito - we're not getting any other reports of this. It might be worth clearing your cache and restarting the browser to see if any of that helps.

This happens with firefox, and IE8 just sits there like a stuffed bat.

I am unable to get any of my websites as when I log in it says I have not built any websites yet despite me having 16 or so I have tried to contact support but it only lets me sign in then keeps asking me to sign in even though Iam already signed in please can someone help me I am able to view my websites but not at the mo able to edit any of them thanks Andy

Good work but ONE REQUEST still...
It cannot be that hard to allow for the YouTube links to be able to post the high definition versions of our videos. I have been a faithful paying customer for 5 years and I need HD for my wedding videography site. PLEASE!!!
So is there 1 type of login panel for the new site membership? As if you click the login/sign up for the existing login panel it still mentions sitebuilder.. however there is only 1 log in panel available in the libary and its massive, just like the comments box.. which is way to big and i cant fit it on my site without ruining the whole design... can we not just have a little link or something?

Hi Ian,
The best thing to do is create a new page for the login widget, then hide it from the menu. You can then have small 'login' links on your page that go to this special login page. We hope to introduce other versions of this widget in the future, but for now this is the only one. I hope that helps,

Thank you for the new feature it will be usefull for many of us. Unfortunatly it seems that some of my site (especially http://www.thierrydemarquest.com/) has a problem to be displayed correctly in resolution like 1024x768 even if he has been made for best viewing in 1200 x 1440. last version of moonfruit made the browser (IE or any other one) creating a horizontal and vertical scroll bar. It seems that is desapeared on the nex version of moonfruit relase. Could you check if there is any problem with HTML and SWF capabilites (I am currently running IE 6 + Flash 10) Best regards
PS : there is also a problem on your Forum page on moonfruit.com it seems it's absolut position split it on the right side making it moving to the left part of the browser without any view it's look's asi if the origin of the sprite has been changed to the half of it.
Yeh the forum on moonfruit.com has gone funny! Is there anyway on the email all members section a way to imbed a image - basically id like to send out a small flyer to my members, but it seems to be text only.. any plans on this?
@ bdesigner - yes, there is a bug with the horizontal scroll bar. A fix should be going out shortly. Thanks.
@ Ian - yes, there is a bug with the forum on mf in IE7. That will be fixed shortly too. And currently the email members is only text, so there is no way to embed an image. We've found that text only emails are less likely to be junked than full HTML emails. You could create a page with more colourful information on your site and then include a link to this in the mail. I am just starting out as a web developer and will be purchasing the reseller package and wondered if that facility was in the reseller package? As I don't want clients logging in to change text and seeing Sitemaker 4.0, as they could then google it and find Moonfruit.com.

I have a few problems regarding this.
1. Most of my webpages have been renamed, for example if a page name is 'Photo Gallery' its now called 'Gallery' or 'Photo-Gallery'.
Before URL: www.mysite.com/photogallery/757564574
NOW URL: www.mysite.com/photo-gallery/757564574 or www.mysite.com/gallery/757564574
This is going to penalize my website in google search because google is going to see this as duplicate content, please get this fixed immediatley.
2. The new members area doesnt load whatsoever.
3. All websites take forever to load.
Can you please sort all this out, I know you are working hard adding widgets here and there, but those widgets you have added will not benefit my site, and you have caused more harm than good, by making my site appearing as having duplicate content when googlebot surfs my site.
I have over a hundred Moonfruit sites....I dont get the big deal with MEMBERSHIP log ins..most of use Twitter or Blog site for what I think you are trying to do...are you leaving the Websites and Ideal of an online store REAL SHOPPING CART HEELOO!! BEHIND. You will never compete with what is free for everyone..facebook, MySpace, Twitter etc...whats the deal...build something you can CHARGE FOR!! sorry for the Rant..I just don't get the direction of trying to catch up to the Monster, Mega Free Social sites...I do know that what you are calling "Membership" must apply and will be needed to create a profile for a Online Store..Is it just imposible to build a good FLASH BASED SHOPPING CART...perhaps

Hi there, I want to add a reservation booking facility to my website as I want to rent out my holiday home. I actually plan to build a dedicated website for it with moonfruit. Anyone know if it can be done or will I have the HTML issues? I dont want to pay a few hundred for software that then cant be used..

I have now problems with any of my sites since the upgrade and have also managed to ugrade my sites to the new membership level.
However, the following issues were highlighted when I tested the functionality of the new membership tool.
1) Password Reset - once you decided to reset a password and follow the procedure of supplying your email address and hitting the submit/send button, nothing happens (although by hitting the button, the task is actully actioned), however, there is no indication as to whether or not the form has been successfully sent. A few more clicks ends up sending numerous password reset emails! Would it not be possible to display a message such as "sent" "submitted" "success" etc.
2) Customising registration success message - There appear to be to no way of customising the message displayed once members have successfully registered. The default Moonfruit text is displayed and the message in my case has no connection to my sites.
3) Receiving emails from the site - when members are registering on the site, "receive emails from this site" box is by default left unchecked. So far, most of the people who signed up on my site forgot to tick the box eventhough they wanted to receive emails from the site. I had to delete them and ask them to re- register and check the receive email box. It may be easier to check this box by default like previously and if members do not want to receive emails from the site, then they can uncheck the box?
Apart from these issues, the new tool rocks!

@ Tommy - you're right about the change to page addresses in the URLs. This is actually as a result of SEO requests from users. Previously if your page is 'photo gallery' it is called /photogallery, but after the change as you say it is /photo-gallery. This allows google to correctly identify the two words which will help the SEO. The previous version does still work, but as a permanent redirect to the new version. So google will not see this is duplicate content, but merely that the content has moved. This is a normal way of updating a website address and recommended by google. So it should be an improvement, not a damaging move.
Re the membership not loading, you may want to submit a support ticket about that as I'm not sure what would cause this. You may also want to upgrade your Flash player, as the new 'Flex' tools require 9 or higher.

I agree with Kombosillah's comments (post 56) about password reset needing an acknowledgement screen. But there is another related problem.
My site is set so that I approve new membership requests. When a propspective member submits their information, they see no message to say that their request is pending - just a blank registration form and they are very likely to repeat the process before giving up.
This needs tidying up.

@ Breakthrough diva - you should be able to use the new membership features immediately, just go to the 'people' section.
@ Grego - there seems to be a cache problem on the account module, so if you clear your cache and reload the site, your sites will show up. They are there, I promise ;-)
@ Lea - I'm sorry you find our customer support frustrating. Do you have a specific issue?
@ Kombosillah - good points for 1 and 3, I've passed your comments to the team. Re 2 (editing the text) we're adding that in at the moment. We'll mop up some bugs this week and release some changes later in the week.
@ Bikini Joe - thanks for the comments. I'm sorry the release is disappointing for you. But we have been saying the same thing for some months now, which is that we have to redo the membership to lay the foundations for the ecommerce system. Without effective member/client management it would be too hard to manage a decent ecommerce site. So we've done that.
Re the social networking, you're right we will never be a social networking site, and nor are we trying to be one. However we do recognise that many of our customers have Facebook/Twitter accounts, etc., and the ability to publish content from their site to those channels can support marketing of their site. These tools really support site growth and site marketing, so that is why we have included them.
So now we can start to move onto the ecommerce. But to set your expectations here, it's not going to be quick. This kind of project will take many months (the membership took 5 and I suspect ecom more). I'm sorry this is no doubt disappointing. I would love to see everything come out more quickly, but we can only go as fast as we can go. As we grow we increase the size of our development team, but there are still limits. Every release has to be integrated into hundreds of thousands of live sites, so we do have to be careful and take our time.
I hope that gives you a better understanding of why we've done the things we've done. Thanks,

joe, i don't doubt they are there, but if they can't be accessed/seen, then what's the point? cleared the cache, rebooted, different browsers, etc....still no joy.
all i see when i go to the site is the background colours, even when it says it is done loading the page.

I love this new improved File Manager, if you do get to improve on the membership tools, people could create their own Social Netowking :D

Don't worry, we're not trying to blame you for it. Systems info includes where you are. If all you home PCs are doing the same thing, then it may be an issue between your ISP and us, or a geographical region and us. Again not you fault, but helps us diagnose it. We're not seeing this on all sites and users, so it's not a general problem. But without further information we can't help solve it.

The cusomtisation is for the design of the widget, not currently the language. However you can add any text you like onto the page itself around the widget, so this could include instructions on how to use the widget. I hope that helps,

We don't seem to be able to load/ upload/ access any of our image files, including the library. Text and other objects can be inserted as usaul, but no graphics. At first we thought we were just experiencing a 'slow' day (sometimes the sites take aaaaaages to load) - but this has persisted for the last few days. Needless to say, severely limits site editing..! Has anyone else reported a similar problem?

The current RSS tools hang off a couple of the newer widgets only: Forum, Comments. We intend to widen this offering in the future. Paid membership will come with the new e-Commerce tools - our next big project. Membership was first as a platform to enable e-Commerce to be applied over the top. And payments via other services like Visa and MC will also included in this project.

I was wondering if i can produce pop up windows for instence Terms & Conditions etc. and when i want to advertise i need to paste in codes via /body in my HTML code how am i going to do that? so they can locate, I hope I told my problem clearly. Thank You.

Our software doesn't provide for pop-up windows. If you wish to add one to your site you would need to go to the Forum and ask the talented Flash Builders amongst the Moonfruit community to give you a quote on building one for you.
As for HTML code for advertising, please see our previous articles about the HTML snippet widget. This may solve your problem.

You see the code i was talking about was the Tracking Code the advertising company give I have to paste that within my site somewhere like the Google ID tool. The snippet I had before with Moonfruit Labs but because it only works on IE, I got a lot of users on Mozzila Firefox, I fink I will consider using the snippet when it is released for Firefox. I wish the Moonfruit staff would produce some informational videos showing and telling about the in's and out's of the new Moonfuit product developments :)
I really feel that Moonfruit product update Videos would better orient and teach us Moonfuiters about how to best go about using, integrating and updating our Moonfruit build sites with some or all of these new Web 2.0 features.
It's kind of like Moonfuit/Sitemaker is a full Web 2.0 technology platform but the methods used to teach the uses are simple old school text.
I very much appreciate all the new Moonfuit product developments and updates - I kind of think a learning center type environment might help us Moonfruiters move up the Web Moonfruit 2.0 learning curve both easier and faster.

I'm trying to enable the Facebook member login, and I have enabled API thing in the 'send a message' tab.
If I try to enable 'connect your site to facebook' I get the following message;
Your site needs a login page to allow visitors to login or signup using their Facebook username and password. To create your login page go to 'pages' -> 'add new page' -> 'login/join' page and then return here to set your this new page as your login page.
I have got a login/join page! I have tried having it hidden, and visible and as the home page, but everytime I press 'fix' the same message comes up.

Hi Joe, Reading what you said to bikini joe you stated membership took 5 months and you suspect ecom to take more. Isnt the ecom already started as there are example screen shots of the admin part of the store in this blog ??
Wouldnt this huge part and aspect of the new widget ecom system already half way through in development push the release date of the new ecom widget system sooner ??
Or isnt the other aspects such as payment gateways implemented in to the new systen yet ?? if you cant really state any on going projects or implementations on the blog il understand, im just trying to understand as fully as possible.

Hi Birdie, The RSS tools are in development and we'll provide more details at a later stage. As for e-commerce, no we cannot provide a date at present. We still have a lot of reviewing, planning and development to do before we can provide even a scratch in the sand.
Hi Dan, Try it now, I just used the Join/Login option on the settings page to select that page you added and Facebook appears to have processed. Can you check this out and let us know if it now works.

how can i remove the bar at the bottom of the page that says build a free website ? i dont want my customers to know i built it myself as it looks so good !
Had a look at some of your guys sites and u dont have the moonfruit bar at the bottom,so can somebody please tell me how to get rid of it.

Hi Robert,
Seeing as you're on a free site package we try to get some benefit - a little advertising. If you do wish to remove this then can we suggest you consider upgrading. The Lite package is quite cheap and you do get extra disc storage for files (20MB > 50MB).

Joie, if you add a Pop-up Gallery widget to your page, go to the Setup tab on the editor and then use the Advanced button you will see a check box to allow "image download". This is the only widget that will permit file download and control. You could also turn the image into a link (through the Editor) to download that image file, or you could add a link under the image (say 'Download' or image_name) and link that to the file.

Hi Birdie, without downloading and testing the software we cannot say. If you can get a demo map from them, or if you build a map on trial then you can try it and see.

Hi, i've discovered a huge problem with the directories, when a member uploads images while listing, once they have uploaded there main image, it says upload success etc, but then it says you can upload another image/file etc or finish uploading. But in the directory itself you can only have one image per listing, I also have no way of tracking images in my file manager when members have uploaded them as i cant link them to any listing, members are uploading more than one image which is pointless as a second image cant be used, also its using up my web space! I've had excellent reviews on forums but i am concerned about webspace (wasted webspace) also what happens to the images that are uploaded by members when they delete there listing?
Is there a fix to these problems? as they are serious.
Is there a limit on how many members you can have?
What is the next step for gaining more webspace? not a reseller, just think my site is going to be very popular, only been on google for 3 days and the interest has been mad.
But dont want to get ripped of with reseller prices.
Also dont want to pay for webspace that isnt getting used correctly due to a fault with the directory uploading.
I keep asking this question but I am desperate for the answer. Any clue on when paid membership will be available as I can't launch my website until it is. Also can you confirm that annual (or any other interval) renewal will be included.

The best way to turn a Word doc into an image is to take a Screen shot. Paste it into an image program (plenty of freebies on the web including paint.net) then save as a JPG.
Images can be uploaded through the mini-toolbar (part of the Editor) if you give a member edit rights, or you can add a form to a members page and allow them to include images if you need other information.
Paid membership is some way off. We would be more likely to focus on e-commerce first and even that is unlikely to make headlines for sometime. Sorry we can't be more specific.

Twitter and RSS are different. We embed the RSS feature into a few of our widgets but that is fairly simple on the newer widget types. We do not offer a Twitter feature though if someone has developed a HTML version that could be uploaded it might be worth testing on our HTML snippet widget (more info on this available elsewhere in the Lounge.

The Directory is a very old widget and at the time of building offered advanced features. At present though it does have a few limitations. The only suggestion I could offer is to create your own directories within your files and any files being uploaded by members would be placed in the root directory. This will not solve the tracking of images although, depending on the use of the directory, you could get members to use the advanced form where they attach images and you then have a record of who sent what image.
At present there is no fix. To my knowledge this is the first time this issue has been raised. There is no current limit on membership numbers. If you want more web space, it really just depends on what package you are on. Although we do offer some supermax packages providing more space and bandwidth (for more information please contact support).
What makes you think you would be ripped off? We don't push Reseller packs on people who do not need them. They have a specific purpose, hence the option of the supermax packages.
You could also go into your library and remove any images you don't wish to be there if you don't want them cluttering your account.

Hi, i really want to use the directory to make a members list. But one thing stopping me is in Set A Link there is a Paypal option. I dont want this to be there, is there anyway to get rid of it. Also on the Paypal it mentions sitemaker, i obviously dont want this. If these things cant be changed is there any other way to make a members list ?

i note the file download does not sem to work for word or pdf documents today? it does work for powerpoints though which is odd. think someone needs to look at this asap.
