Holy Twitter Batman - the campaign response
By Joe on Thursday, July 2 2009, 12:45 - Moonfruit in the news - Permalink
Many of you will have noticed our twitter campaign that started on Tuesday to give away 10 Macbook Pros to celebrate the 10th Birthday of Moonfruit. Yes we're that old ;-). But I don't think any of us expected it to go quite so crazy.
We've been trending at the number 1 spot on twitter for the last 36 hours or more, our number of followers is approaching 20,000 before the end of the first 48 hours and our site traffic has increased by 8 times or more. Ouch.
Mashable (The Social Media Guide) has written this up as 'A Twitter campaign done right' and an SEO expert calls us bigger than Michael Jackson. And Brand Republic calls it a massive success.
At around midnight last night 300 tweets per minute were about moonfruit and this accounted for 1.63% of all twitter traffic. And including the Mashable article that was also trending about Moonfruit it was around 2.85% in total.

Interesting times. We're looking forward to seeing what happens...

Congratulations, guys! You deserve it for the great service you've provided me for the last nine years....xx
Wow I bet #moonfruit has been number one for a minute now i am crossing my fingers to see who they announce as the next wnner! #moonfruit
je parle pas anglais mais j'espere gagner le mcbook air !!! vive moonfruit :)
Well done guys, great innovative campaign. But then I'd expect nothing less from you! (And ignore all the 'spamming' talk ... I still think its a great Twitter campaign ... and even blogged about it http://bit.ly/KzvS8)
I just hope those mac books actually go to payment moonfruit users.. the amount of people i have recommended to moonfruit is off the scale.. i work for a hosting company but always recommend moonfruit to the less savy people - but even i use it!! love it!
You can't by this level of publicity and awareness through traditional means, fantastic brand recognition to build on. An interesting comparison to Habitat's recent mistakes on Twitter.
Given that it's gone so crazy, and the basic macbook pro is only 1199 USD, you should seriously consider surprising us all with some extra giveaways. More macbooks would be great, but ipods, good earphones, decent laptop bags, even t-shirts and stickers would all go down well.
Your SEO "bigger than Michael Jackson" link, it breaketh. However, if you extend that trend graph back a ways, MJ does look to be somewhat bigger: http://twist.flaptor.com/?span=168
You're right MJ is bigger. As it should be ;-)

@joe Something fishy in the comment posting system, it omitted a closing A tag after that link and broke subsequent links and buttons.
Yes, I spotted that and fixed it. It was a bit weird.

Does a #moonfruit here count double ? :)
You would think that a me-too campaign off of squarespace.com's (your competitor -- of which you have an EXACTLY identical campaign) wouldn't really see as much traction.
Thanks Hah, that's really generous. The SS guys did a great campaign, we always acknowledged that. Did you read http://mashable.com/2009/07/01/moon...
If you check the details the campaigns weren't exactly the same. Hope you win!
Joe
I didn't even know about Moonfruit until I saw it on Twitter. Great campaign idea!
As for why squarespace hasn't has as many hits...Moonfruit has a better name, IMO.
Fantastic job with the campaign. You picked the right time and the right way to go about it for sure! I wrote about you guys in my blog. Keep up the great work, glad to hear that it is trickling into more website traffic too.
Cheers,
Tyson
What an amazing and exciting campaign: I've put in my tweet (@ymib): Moonfruit: It's Sweeter Than The Rest: http://twitpic.com/929rh #moonfruit
Genius. This is a shining example of the power of social media. 8x traffic increase could never be bought. How do you guys decide which tweet to choose when there are 300/minute?? For fear that you might miss a few, I repeat mine here. I hope you're lyrically entertained... @jtgameover
rhyming about #moonfruit in my zootsuit, no point moot as i play this crapshoot for mac loot. more toots to follow suit, it'll be dutch goot
@moontweet the fruit of the moon (#moonfruit), not to be confused with fruit of the loom, these beautiful websites make your eyes BOOM.
the l33t viral campaign of @moontweet can't be beat, #moonfruit running 36 hours in #1 topic heat, 8x incrs on web feet http://bit.ly/eMJ3j
An #appaday keeps the #moonfruit away!!! Take two of these and DM me in the morning.... http://twitpic.com/94b1z
I think its disgusting. Spamming a service that is NOT yours. You shouldn't do things like this. You are just annoying people who think that moonfruit is a slang term for vagina.
it seems now your more bothered about being number 1 on twitter than sorting out your own website... I am getting fed up of it all I also agree that your just spamming now...
Hi Rob and Angel,
I'm sorry that you are not happy with the campaign. There is no doubt we wanted to create buzz, but we didn't expect it to get so big. If you read the customer posts the overwhelming majority are very positive and people are playing with the name and being very creative. We're trying to shift things towards this more creative response as this is in line with our company objective of creating websites and empowering people to do so. People are choosing to enter and their contribution is extraordinary.
I hope that gives you a better idea of where we're coming from. The dev team, network team and customer support team are still doing their day jobs of supporting and developing the product. And in a week or so, this will all be forgotten. Take care,
Joe
well done guys, 10 macbooks is a amazing prize :)
You are just spammers. No two ways around it. I'm dropping followers who re-spam your stuff and there's no way in hell that I'd ever use your sorryassed little company.
This is an extremely good example of an Internet promotion done the right way. Well done, guys.
As a moonfruit user, I am quite happy with the service that you provide to me for the money U charge.
Just wanted to say, i wish i could emulate this kind of success for my business as well. All those spamming remarks are just palin jealous of your IM skills.
The buzz you have created is priceless!
Good luck!
Well done Moonfruit team!
Here is a blog post that I have done for you all. I am sure you are going to see a massive bump in traffic & revenue!
This is an excellent example of Online marketing! Keep it up! I wish I had thought about it as well!
;-)
I'm really happy for you guys. I've been here since 2001, and am well chuffed to see you do so well.
I think you've gained something like 35 thousand followers on twitter since you started the comp? I remember looking at it a few days before, and I think you were on nine thousand. Now it's fourty four!
You deserve the coverage, because you've ALWAYS offered a great service. I just hope that some of those people that have entered the competition will become paying customers...
Don't worry about people like "Phil", above. It's just jealousy.
