RESOLVED: Service Disruption 09:11 BST (GMT +1) 02 Jul 2009
By Walt on Thursday, July 2 2009, 09:47 - Service status - Permalink
DETAIL: We are experiencing a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the services, which is currently overloading our firewalls.
RESPONSE: Our technical team are working hard to get this attack under control and return full service to all customers. We hope to have this completely resolved shortly.
UPDATE: We've managed to block what appears to have been three different types of DDoS attack. Combating the three attacks has taken us longer than expected but we appear to have got them under control as of 11:35 but continued to experience minor issues until 12:32 BST (GMT +1).

good luck.
Hope it gets sorted soon and there is some way of preventing it from happening again. Thank goodness for moonfruit lounge I thought things had just gone badly wrong with moonfruit it's good to be kept informed x
Most likely not an attack but a genuine increase in interest following from your twitter campaign! Bittersweet.
what is a DDoS? sorry its not my area? anyway does all this mean that i cant see my website>
Cheers
Denial of Service
This is also not my area, and not really interested, hence why i use moonfruit. However why does over 2 million sites fail to load when something like this happens. i guess it's some sort of server/hosting problem? Only happened about 4 times in the past 3 months... but still very worrying!
Also, why is it that the moonfruit lounge is not affected?
Hi Robert,
All sites are housed within the same network, so when the network traffic is flooded it can affect all of them. This pretty rare, but we're on the case.
@Kat - it's definitely not legitimate use follow the twitter campaign.
Thanks,
Joe
Well I know for a fact my sites are down and I do happen to be interested in the news and hope there will come a cure for the problem soon and hopefully something that can prevent this kind of disruption in a lasting way. Good luck, because this must be affecting and irritating a heck of a lot of users.
I can't log into my site or at the front page of moonfruit.
You're one of the big boys now and someone doesn't like it, haha.
I love moonfruit. Will always be loyal. Good luck, i need to do some site work!
I cannot even access the moonfruit front page or my websites without an explorer error page appearing. I love moonfruit also and don't like to see it attacked like this at all and hope future issues like this will be blocked off somehow.
I guess because my site is not commercial, i don't have the same concerns as some who run a business via moonfruit. Must be really irritating for them, but it's not moonfruits fault. They need to stop repeat attacks somehow though.
Hey guys, we really need to do something about these outages, I am running a site which needs to be updated regularly so anything that can be done would be appreciated.
Hi Belfast, don't worry we'll be having a full review after this and see what we can do to further safeguard things. We'll let you know. Thanks,
Joe
Don't forget to pause your adwords campaigns peoples!
thanks for the update moonfruit. hope it is sorted soon.
Hi Guys,
Glad I eventually tracked down a page from Moonfruit that I could access! I was getting a tad concerned with thoughts of bankruptcy and receivers going through my head. I am running a business and have three websites on the go through you guys. One just launched, it is a business specific website aimed at corporate clients and the launch has been co-ordinated with a press campaign and no one can see the site! I know you will all be there pulling your hair out but is there any estimated time for going back on line so I can inform our PR team as I am sure they will be cursing me as it is? From the previous posts there seems to be a bit of confusion, is the down time due to an attack or is it just that there is unprecedented use and the servers cant take it. What is a DDos? Good Luck and it would be great if the site maker team could send out an email to let us know when the servers up and running again. Good Luck Guys :o)
CONGRATULATIONS We are all back on line thanks for all your hard work you super stars XX
Amanda-check your sites now I think mine are all working again now xxx Thanks Moonfruit!
Well nearly one of my sites is only displaying the background :o( but hey two out of three aint bad :o)
hello, it appears my website will not load, although a few people have commented this is back to normal, and their sites are working? i am confused, firefox simply says... Failed to Connect, and cannot establish a connection.
All done up and running again. Must remember to go activate my adwords now. Big Thanks x
oh, sorry for the double post, i don't usually do this. But it appears my site is now loading, (very slowly) so it seems to be up again to an extent. I would also like to say i hope you catch the loser ddosing the servers and charge them to the full extent of the law. this disruption of service is very annoying, (and rather quite pathetic at how someone can do this).
Back here too.
There may be some slowness as we come back to full power. We're still shutting out Ddos IP addresses, so there may be some variability. Thanks,
Joe
its still down
websites were up but have now gone down again
Mine too there one minute and then when I go back to edit gone again. I know this will take a while to even out, thanks for working hard to resolve the issue. Time to get the team onto some serious network security. Cheers Amanda
Ain't that the truth Amanda. We're tweaking the defenses. Should start to stabilise shortly. Thanks for your patience.
Joe
To all the non-techies. A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is where a hacker will use a massive army of hacked computers called a "botnet" to send huge amounts of data to a server from many different locations rendering the servers internet access is effectively blocked by all of these requests.
It's an extremely potent form of attack, difficult to stop and even harder to prevent against. So don't blame Moonfruit. I'm sure their admins are going mental trying to sort this mess out. :)
Thanks Rich97,
And yes, it has been a rather hectic morning. But we do seem to have this fully under control.
Also, for those who are interested, we aren't the only ones to suffer DDoS attacks.
Banks in Europe and the UK have suffered (RBS - WorldPay) over the past few years, as have gambling and gaming sites, Internet companies like DoubleClick, government sites (Iran's, following the recent disputed elections) and, believe it or not countries - Estonia and Georgia's entire network, after a dispute with Russia.

Thanks Rich for the info, I am a newbie to networking and can grasp a concept when the acronym is explained. The sitemaker team were on the case and dealt with the attack in great time well done you folks.
Why is moonfruit constantly down at the moment ? This is a service we are paying for? I cant access my e-mails or site ?
This is really wrong.
