Domain Name Prices Rise

Effective immediately, we have had to raise our domain name prices from a basic price of £8.99/$12.99/€11.99 to £10.99/$14.99/€12.99 including UK VAT. There are several reasons for this, which are really based on the wholesale prices of domains increasing and not us wanting to take more of your money.
As some of you may know, most domain wholesale prices are actually set in USD (US Dollars). Two things have happened to affect the rate here. Firstly, Verisign (the registry that manages COM/NET domains) has decided to increase domain name prices for the 3rd time in 4 years by another 7%, taking the total increase to about 22% since 2006. Secondly, the GBP (British Pounds) exchange rate has fallen vs the Dollar (and Euro) significantly in the last couple of years, which makes prices more expensive for all domains. We try to keep all domains at the same price and manage profitability across them all as a group, which is why all domains are affected by this price increase.
Many other domain providers have also raised their prices in the last year or so in response to the price increases. They also tend to quote prices excluding VAT, while we quote prices including VAT. For example many providers may quote for a £9.99 domain + UK VAT = £11.73, while we are charging £10.99 including VAT.
Remember, you still get a free domain voucher with SiteMaker Standard and Plus accounts with two vouchers for a Max account. So these are now even better value.
And with all of our domains you still get 5 free mailboxes, so we hope you still feel it’s a good deal.
We did notice that there was a bug with the voucher pricing: they were still at the old prices and did not fully cover these price increases. We have now fixed this bug and we have a list of customers who have had to 'top-up' with a payment to make the purchase. We will refund that 'top-up' to all those customers over the next 24-48 hours. We can only apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused.
So there you have it. And just in case you thought this was a sign of things to come, we have no plans to increase our prices on the software. In fact we haven't put prices up on SiteMaker for over 5 years even though we continue to develop the product and release more features on a regular basis.
Comments
I do not mean to be rude but your comments seem a little misleading and unclear 123-reg.co.uk offer 2 years domain name (co.uk) for £5.98 (many many names available) if you include the vat this adds up to around £6.47 for 2 years so not sure why you saying all of the above your domain names are a little over priced I think end of as for the GBP it is not as bad as you think and make out you should not rely on using dollars to pay for your domain you do not have to and also using the 2.5 % vat increase is also unfair as were are talking of 2.5 % not really a great difference !
also org.uk .me.uk
£8.99 to £10.99 including UK VAT
so your raising each domain name by £2 it is a bit steep and considering most will have several websites I have about 10 domain names it is going to hit us all again I am not sure you can jusify the vat increase as they were that price before the vat went down yet for those who had purchased before vat went down did not get anything considering I got a 2 year domain name I got nothing only those who purchased while vat went down
Also I am glad your not putting your prices up I am already paying £15.99 a month now and I feel anymore I would not be able to stay with you as £15.99 x 12 = £191.88 which is quite enough I enjoy Moonfruit but if you think about other website hosting and also free social sites now the price should reflect other markets I want you to be the best but also competive and reasonable
Hi guys,
The VAT increase has nothing to do with the price rise, we were just pointing out that our prices are generally quoted inc VAT, whereas many other domain providers quote theirs excluding VAT.
We do try to remain competitive, but domains are an area where the cost to us to provide them to you has increased. I would also say that all our domains include 5 mailboxes, the quoted 123reg price is correct, but they also charge £0.99 per month for a mailbox, nearly £12 per year for 1 or £60 for 5. So on that basis, it's pretty expensive.
I hope that helps,
Joe
While I will not argue with fees for domain names, I am aware that inflation is running rife. I will say that in two years with Moonfuit I have yet to get a so-called voucher. If I have then before I could ever use it, it's been taken away. Indian giving is not my style, so I'll argue with that one.
Hi David,
I've had a look on your account and you've had 2 vouchers, both of which have been used for your main domain name dailybedlam.com. If you're having problems with a different account, then please contact support and we'll be able to sort it out for you. But everything looks normal for the account I have seen. Thanks,
Joe
